Caravans of salt

Continuation of the gallery “In the origins of Earth“.

Salt isn’t only exploited to Afdera, but also on the lake Assal (or lake Karum). But here, no trucks and “modern” tools to exploit the white gold. Salt is manually extracted and transported with camels up to the market of Mekele, 80 km farther, in 1 week.

Erta Ale volcano and its lava lake

Erta Ale is an active shield volcano located in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is the most active volcano in Ethiopia. Erta Ale stands 613 metres tall, with a lava lake, one of only four in the world, at the summit.

End of day in the desert

One of the best moment of the day… Sunset… Finally the heat decreases. A very hard day for the car as for the bodies… The time also to share a meal.

This place is the terminus of an extremely chaotic track (max. 10-15 kph) on the solidified lava. It is also the base camp to reach by feet Erta Ale, an active volcano.
